Happy Friday, fam! Right before things got chaotic, I took a dance class with a dear friend! This is my 2nd dance class since being bedridden in 2014. I’ve been consciously avoiding going back because of the silly conversations in my head - “you’re not good enough anymore”... “it won’t be perfect”... “you’ll look silly”... but I chose to go anyways and my heart was SO full 🤗 I look forward to when this pandemic is over and I can consistently get back into dance 🥰 it’s one of my goals for this year! Until then, dancing in my room in front of the mirror will just have to do lol! (Creating joy and normalization in the little things and adapting to our circumstances is key. 😍 Transformations like this bring tears to my eyes and a smile to my face. @claire .juliet is one of my Fit Rise members and I have full faith she has inspired thousands around the world by sharing her story. She shows us how our pain and loss can be transformed into something positive. She shares, 'Lost my Mum to cancer Sept 2018, was grieving hard, and struggling every day. Big steps are hard. Period. There’s no but here. The truth is that your best life is outside of your comfort zone and your best moves are always your hardest. I know this is hard for the planners out there especially when that leap is a trip or a new job/position, or even a person. We want to make sure we make the right decision based on circumstance and that’s ok. Once you get better at trusting the process, spirit, and the universe, you’ll look at results differently. It will no longer be a possible fail. You’ll look at things as a gain of experience and knowledge. You never really lose. Take that leap and get ready to live real life outside of your comfort zone.

If you know that being in big crowds make you anxious when you have a lot on your mind, it’s best to skip crowded areas until your mind is clear and you know you can handle it. When you know yourself and you’ve taken note of triggers, you take control over the situation. Accountability is important in order to heal.

Hi friends! It’s me! Bare face and all. Simply grateful to be back on social media with an undeniable sense of purpose and faith. Although I’ve been “away”, I’ve been closer than you think. A CRAPPY SITUATION? There’s a lot going on right now and you’d be far from alone if you felt like it’s a crappy situation. And I know there’s lots of ways to positively spin this, for example it’s: A gift to the environment. A reset of humanities awareness of our connectedness. A chance to stop and breath. An opportunity to find new possibilities and ways to work. A pattern interrupt on many levels of our society which, let’s face it, has been running unsustainably for a very long time… These are all valid perspectives that can help you through these times. The thing is, they’re also mostly future-positive and all very meta ideas. And let’s be real: Right now, in the present, at the coal face of day to day human experience it’s a bit more nitty gritty right? There are many things that, understandably, feel like sucky situations. We can’t buy the things we usually buy or go places we usually go. We can’t see the people we would usually see (and maybe we’re seeing more than usual of the closest people in our lives, which can bring up it’s own issues ). Plans that we made have had to be cancelled; events, holidays, ceremonies, meetings and more. We don't know what’s going to happen with our finances, the economy, our jobs. We’re concerned about our health and the health of our loved ones. And no doubt many other issues… It could get you down… but it doesn’t have to. Situations like this may be out of your personal control. But your state of being - your feelings- are not. What if there was a simple way to shift your state to one that feels great regardless of the circumstances? I decided to make this weeks podcast episode a mini training and share an exercise which will help you shift to a positive and powerful state when circumstances are getting you down. Many people have pain due to contracted foot muscles (often caused by wearing wrong footwear ), but don’t even know about it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Gaining greater foot flexibility will decrease the chance of foot related injuries or health problems that can eventually transform to knee or lower back issues. Having good toe flexibility can also help restore normal toe alignment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While stretching, you might experience cramping around your arch. So grateful for this book!!! It opened my eyes this morning to the fear that I have around the food. Or rather, it inspired me to give myself permission to acknowledge that I have this fear, and use it to control what and how I eat. My fear is: "If I do not control what and how I eat, I will become fat, ugly and ultimately UNLOVEABLE." . It is not my fear, it was impressed onto my subconscious by others, but it stuck with me. And today for the first time I consciously saw how it makes me doubt myself. And as a result, I rarely fully enjoy what I eat! But I love every meal that I create!!! . The reality is, I do not need to be afraid. I have healthy structures in place that keep me in excellent physical, mental and emotional health. And I am pleased and proud of myself for this achievement! But by being oblivious to this fear, by suppressing it, I took a lot of joy out of cooking and enjoying my meals. . Merely acknowledging that I do have this fear and that the weight gain is an acceptable possibility, has liberated something inside me. All the sudden, I felt free and empowered that regardless of this fear, I have established wholesome structures around my health and wellbeing that bring me the results I want - being healthy, active, youthful, fit and radiant. . Sometimes you have to dig deep. A lot of what needs to be healed was started as a child. Childhood trauma gets masked a lot of times so that we can continue our day to day life. Without taking off that mask and attacking the issues, you don’t have a way to really truly heal. This means sometimes you’ll cry, be uncomfortable, you may even look at people you once respected differently once you get to the bottom of it all. It’s all apart of the needed process though.

You know that glow that washes over your face when you find yourself immersed in something truly rewarding? It happened to me. I got outside for a short, innocent morning run on my own and suddenly realized that I’ve missed this side of me. This part that seeks and settles into a consistent stride of rhythm and breath; feels each step of earth beneath my Asics; listens to nature’s music, or a favorite playlist. And today— I felt appreciation for spending time in my own company, feeling the familiar nudge to remember what feeds and nourishes my soul most. It’s so easy to forget sometimes about activities we most like to do or want to do - for ourselves. Little things even. I purchased a “mindful lettering” workbook a year ago, but haven’t even opened it yet! I hadn’t given myself the time or the guilt-free luxury. Why? We set things aside and often replace them with our “shoulds” list. Should clean out my closet; should reorganize the kitchen pantry; should do those six loads of laundry sitting there. But— I realized after this run 🏃🏼♀️ how GREAT it felt to follow that glimmer of desire and joy bubbling inside and...just do it. I felt alive because of minutes I gifted myself doing something I love, while still honoring the necessity for social distancing. Yes— something just for me, my well-being, my mood, my sanity. Today I’m appreciating a really good night’s sleep, earplugs (that facilitated that good night’s sleep in a small house, with other people, some of whom are night owls )and essential oils. The last few days I have been diffusing Frankincense and Bergamot, both known for their anti-inflammatory and stress relieving effects. There’s always talk about needing to be accepted for who you are, but could you accept you from someone else? No, you shouldn’t change yourself for someone else, but if you have toxic qualities you should change them for you. We have to hold ourselves to the same standard we hold others.

Why I almost quit nurse practitioner school: It was a meeting we had where we discussed what the "real world" would look like. How many patients was typical to see in a day. 25-35. 25-35 people to see, in about 15 minute time periods. Enough time to meet someone, listen to their symptoms, prescribe a pill, and hope they take it. I knew that wasn't for me. I had dreams of sitting down with people and listening to their lives, figuring out the patterns they see repeating in their health, learning about their families, their source of stress. Finding out how they eat, how they exercise, what they like to do for fun, what gives their lives meaning. You can't do that in 15 minutes. Plus, I didn't want to just treat symptoms. Symptoms are our bodies telling us something is WRONG. Silencing symptoms with a blood pressure or cholesterol or diabetes medication isn't going to change the trajectory of the disease; in fact, we know that these medications virtually do nothing to reduce mortality. Taking a pill won't give you extra years to see your grandchildren grow up. Or to travel the world. Or to simply live without pain and constant hospital admissions. I worked in the hospital for years as a nurse and all I knew was I needed to keep people as far away from it as possible. All my tests in school were about pharmacology, coming up with treatment plans, following the guidelines. None were about how to actually prevent disease from occuring in the first place. I didn't learn about nutrition in nurse practitioner school. I learned about it on my own, though. When I graduated I said that no matter what—I would never practice a style of medicine that wasn't in alignment with my core beliefs. I believe you can heal yourself. I believe that food is medicine. I believe that stress reduction can prevent disease. I believe that unprocessed trauma and emotion leads to dis-ease. I believe that almost any chronic disease can be reversed with the right mindset. And I see it happen all the time. I am so proud to practice lifestyle + integrative medicine.
True Story: A client of mine was struggling with IBS. She was a young 22 year old dancer who loved her food but was aware that in her industry looks were everything and at this particular time she was trying to get a job. She had made big changes to her diet to help with her symptoms, but she couldn’t predict when her symptoms of bloating, indigestion and occasional diarrhoea would strike. So during the acupuncture treatment she agreed to delve a bit deeper into her condition. I helped her to look at the thoughts and feelings behind the problem and discovered that the root of the problem for her was guilt. Every time she ate food that she really loved her thoughts were along the lines of: ‘I shouldn’t be eating this’ ‘Im never going to get that job if I’m eating this’. . In essence her thoughts were instructing her body NOT to digest . A conflict arose every time she ate between wanting to eat and not wanting to digest. . The problem and the IBS was resolved once she recognised it was her thoughts and feelings that were creating the problem. She consciously gave herself permission to enjoy her food, changed her thoughts to ones of gratitude and within a few weeks her symptoms started to subside. KNOW YOUR WHY 🌈 It’s easy for me to get all tangled up with things. I make messes fairly well! In my head, in my environment, with relationships, in conversation. And then I obsess about putting things back in compartments and boxes and finding labels to make it all neat again. (Metaphorical labels, of course. The label maker actually didn’t make it to Aiken when we moved. ) Often I can’t see anything except the messy messes and my brain can’t stop thinking about either how to dive in and untangle them or how to completely avoid the shame I have for creating them! Call it ADHD, call it creativity, call it an inflamed and undisciplined brain. Whatever the case, these messes are also a way that I keep myself from being really connected & close with the people I love the most. If I have urgent messes to clean-up then I can’t possibly read a second bedtime story! Or linger in a kiss on my way out. Or remember to do the thing I promised I would do. (It makes me sad to acknowledge it. ) This season in nature is teaching me so much. With less stuff and less commitments and more focus and time, I’m left with a little less messy and a few more opportunities. To stop working. To get out of my head. To see what really matters! I always knew I would have a family, and I think I always knew they would all be boys (the dog too! ) But I don’t think I knew it would be so hard to be an attentive and loving and present wife and mother. To not feel like a failure with every mistake I make and re-make. And while I’m always aware that these messes are human and my stories and shame are mine to write and re-write, I can’t always clean-up or ignore the pain I feel for it. I got to spend some time away from my little family this weekend. (Which is so healthy, because now I like them again. ) These crazy-ass people are my why. They are the reason I spin my wheels and chase my tail and cry snotty tears while writing IG posts. There’s so much that I hope for all of them to have and be and experience on this wild-life ride. But I don’t need to work so hard to give them that! I only need to heal my messes, and sit with the truth that as I experience deep healing, they heal too. Xo, Ry
Acceptance. What does it mean to accept one's diagnosis? If I "accept" what my Western doctor tells me about my Fibromyalgia, doesn't that mean I'm rejecting what other doctors and mind-body professionals say about my Fibromyalgia? Why does it have to be that way? Perhaps I'll switch. I accept my Fibromyalgia, from the perspective of my Ayurvedic doctors and mind-body professionals. Who know how to heal auto immune diseases. Who have no link to profitable pharmaceutical companies. Who just want me to heal because I can heal just like thousands of other people. Accepting Fibromyalgia doesn't mean accepting a lifelong illness. Sorry but i don't buy it. Ayurveda and all Eastern medicine have been healing autoimmune disorders for thousands of years, before these disorders had official medical names like "Fibromyalgia" which is really just the name for several different symptoms that Western medicine can't work out. I don't accept that. I accept truth and self-healing and i know it is just my programming from a young age that made me dependent on the men in white coats. I hear people's distrust of mind-body medicine and self-healing, they say "if that was actually true why doesn't everyone know about it", but the knowledge is freely out there. If you feel called to look for it, you'll find it. I've spent the last 8 years unlearning previous programming about healing, Western medicine and long-term suffering from autoimmune diseases. I do not accept it. What i accept is that i have this temporary experience in the moment that i have it, but it will be healed. This is not faith. This is not positivity. Gratitude feels so good because it is the state of mind closest to your natural state in which you were born to live - Esther Hicks . I practice gratitude every single day. I write a whole page of all the best things in my life right now. And make sure I feel super good when I write it. . Maybe things are not that great in your reality. But abundance is EVERYWHERE if you shift your perspective. We tend to focus on the LACK of things but fail to realise that there is so much joy and life flowing everywhere constantly. Look at all the water flowing out of your tap, look at all the flowers and the leaves growing on the trees, listen to your friend’s laugh, see the passion is that artist’s eyes, look at all the beautiful colours on that painting. . Focusing your attention on the things you are grateful for allows you to invite more good in your life. Literally. Energy flows where your attention goes. Reality is a projection of your thoughts or the things you habitually think about.
